GEARS is a licensed RES Aggregator in the Greek wholesale electricity market, one of the largest aggregators in the market, currently representing 794 MW of RES. The company brings dozens of RES producers under one roof, combining production forecasting, market representation, trading, and operation & maintenance services across the full lifecycle of a RES investment. Beyond market participation, GEARS also carries the settlement procedure, closing out obligations with the Greek Energy Exchange and the Clearing Entity, then paying out every producer it represents.
Aggregating renewable generation at this scale means running a trading desk and a payment operation at the same time, closing a market position across a portfolio of thousands of plants, then tracing that position back to what each individual producer is owed. Over more than a year of partnership, GEARS has come to run both on ATLAS.
Integrated ETRM Modules
- Deal Capturing
- Structured recording of all trading activity across the represented portfolio, feeding the settlement cycle that produces each producer's payment according to specific settlement rules that apply to each contract.
- Scheduling
- Bidding and market participation across spot markets, including intraday continuous market activity, run entirely via ATLAS.
- Portfolio & Asset Management
- Thousands of connected RES plants, each with its data organized and tracked from one central platform.
- Back Office
- Works out what needs to be settled automatically, down to the individual payout for every client GEARS represents.
- Market Intelligence
- Custom analysis and trading strategies reshaped daily by the GEARS team as trading conditions rapidly evolve.
- Dashboards & Reporting
- Custom dashboards tracking the key indexes of the portfolio in real time, with daily and weekly reporting configured to the team's needs.
Alongside these modules, GEARS linked its own SCADA infrastructure directly into ATLAS using the standard ETRM API Gateway, so plant-level data flows in as it's generated, with no separate monitoring tool required.
"Working with StellarBlue has given us the operational backbone to run our entire portfolio, for all the procedures that a RES Aggregator runs into on one reliable platformsystem."
Iakovos Antonoglou, Head of Trading, GEARS
We spoke with Iakovos Antonoglou, Head of Trading in GEARS, about how that came together.
What challenge were you facing?
We were running trading, settlement, and producer payments across disconnected tools. When the portfolio grew, this became a bottleneck, and we also lacked unified dashboards for market and system information.
Why did you choose StellarBlue?
Their deep knowledge on the Greek market structure and aggregator procedures, which helps us quickly identify and resolve market and settlement issues. The platform also provides a well-structured and maintained time-series repository with the market and system information we need to shape our trading strategies.
How did this impact your operations?
ATLAS gave us a single source of truth, replacing the disconnected tools we had been previously using. We can now trace a market position back to each producer’s payout in one system, which reduced manual reconciliation and speed up our daily trading workflows. It also gave us the dashboards and portfolio visibility we were missing, so we monitor positions and resolve issues much faster.
What were the results?
ATLAS gave us the scalability to grow the portfolio without adding proportional back-office and middle office effort. We can now onboard new plants and producers quickly, and we have the granularity to analyze performance per plant, per producer, and per market segment. That has improved both our operational control and the quality of our trading decisions.
What makes this partnership stand out?
What stands out is how quickly and directly StellarBlue responds when issues arise. Support is practical and specific, not generic, which matters when market or settlement problems need same-day resolution. That responsiveness makes them feel like an extension of our team rather than an external vendor.
How would you summarize your experience?
ATLAS has become the operational core of how GEARS runs its portfolio: one platform supporting our team from forecast and trading to final payout, for all RES producers we represent.
Partnership Success: This collaboration shows what an ETRM can do beyond a single trading desk, carrying an aggregator through market participation, plant-level monitoring, and payouts to every producer it represents, all from one system.
